Goethe A1 writing practice
Practise forms, short notes and simple personal messages with clear corrections for word order, verb forms and articles.
Goethe A1 preparation should make basic German automatic. Train introductions, numbers, appointments, shopping, family, travel and the short, practical tasks that appear at beginner level.
The Goethe-Zertifikat A1 and telc Deutsch A1 both use the Start Deutsch 1 format, so the same practice works for both. Take a timed German A1 mock test with answers and see your score instantly.
The Goethe-Zertifikat A1: Start Deutsch 1 has a written exam (Hören, Lesen, Schreiben) of about 65 minutes and a 15-minute speaking exam taken in a group of up to four candidates. Each module gives 15 raw points, which are multiplied by 1.66, so each module counts about 25 of the 100 points.
| Module | Time | Parts and questions | What you do |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hören (Listening) · 25 points | approx. 20 min | 3 parts, 15 questions | Teil 1: 6 short everyday conversations, multiple choice (heard twice). Teil 2: 4 announcements, richtig/falsch (heard once). Teil 3: 5 phone messages, multiple choice (heard twice). |
| Lesen (Reading) · 25 points | 25 min | 3 parts, 15 questions | Teil 1: two short emails or letters, 5 richtig/falsch. Teil 2: 5 situations, choose the right advert or web page (a or b). Teil 3: 5 signs and notices, richtig/falsch. |
| Schreiben (Writing) · 25 points | 20 min | 2 parts | Teil 1: fill in 5 missing details in a form using a short text (5 points). Teil 2: write a short message of about 30 words, one or two sentences on each of 3 given points (10 points). |
| Sprechen (Speaking) · 25 points | approx. 15 min | 3 parts | Teil 1: introduce yourself, then spell a word and repeat a number (3 points). Teil 2: ask and answer questions with word cards on a theme (6 points). Teil 3: make requests with picture cards and react to them (6 points). No preparation time. |
The written exam is worth 75 points and speaking 25 points. You pass with at least 60 points in total, as long as you take every part. A good speaking score can balance a weaker written result, but with fewer than 35 written points a pass is no longer possible, even with full marks in speaking.

Start Goethe A1 practiceSprechen is a group exam with up to four candidates and two examiners, and there is no preparation time. In Teil 1 you introduce yourself using cue words, then spell a word and repeat a number. In Teil 2 and Teil 3 you work with cards. In the official Goethe sample test they look like this:
Task: Practice task: your friend Anna has invited you to her birthday party on Saturday. Write her a short message (about 30 words): thank her, say whether you are coming, and ask what you can bring.
Liebe Anna,
vielen Dank für deine Einladung! Ich komme gern am Samstag zu deiner Party. Was kann ich mitbringen? Vielleicht einen Kuchen oder Getränke?
Bis Samstag!
Viele Grüße
RaviThis is our own practice task in the official Teil 2 format, not an official exam question. The answer covers all three points with one or two sentences each, uses a greeting and a closing, and is about 30 words long, as the task instructions ask.
Combine level-appropriate reading and listening work with regular productive practice. The aim is not to memorise model answers; it is to build language you can use confidently when the task changes.
Practise forms, short notes and simple personal messages with clear corrections for word order, verb forms and articles.
Rehearse introducing yourself, asking and answering simple questions, and making everyday requests without freezing.
Adjust the pace to your exam date and spend more time on the skill with the lowest practice scores.
60 out of 100 points. The written part (Lesen, Hören, Schreiben) gives up to 75 points and Sprechen up to 25 points. You need 60 in total and must complete all parts.
Lesen takes 25 minutes, Hören about 20 minutes and Schreiben 20 minutes, so the written exam lasts about 65 minutes. Sprechen takes about 15 minutes and is done in a small group.
The Goethe-Institut publishes free official Übungssätze (sample papers) with audio and answer keys for Start Deutsch 1. Use them to learn the format, then practise extra tasks with feedback so you can fix your mistakes before the exam.
A1 tests very basic German: introducing yourself, understanding simple messages and filling in forms. You need 60 of 100 points, so you can lose some points and still pass. Knowing the format of every part before exam day helps most, because the tasks are short and timed.
In India the exam is run by the Goethe-Institut Max Mueller Bhavan and its partner centres. Dates, fees and the number of seats differ by city and fill up quickly, so register with your nearest centre as early as possible.
A1 German is often required for a spouse or family reunion visa. Many embassies accept the Goethe-Zertifikat A1, but always check the current requirements for your visa type with the German embassy or consulate.
Start with a focused session and use each correction to make the next answer stronger.
