You cannot compensate a weak module. Scoring 24/25 in Reading does not rescue a 12/25 in Listening. Each module is graded independently, so one weak skill fails the whole exam even if your total is above 60%. This is why targeted practice on your weakest skill beats general study every time.
Passing criteria by level
A1 and A2 (Start Deutsch 1 / 2)
At A1 and A2 the modules are grouped into two blocks. You need roughly 60% of the written block (Lesen, Hören, Schreiben) and 60% of the oral block (Sprechen) separately. Failing either block means failing the exam, even if your combined score looks acceptable.
B1, B2 and C1
Four independent modules worth 25 points each, as shown in the table above. Pass mark: 15 points (60%) per module. This is the strictest interpretation of the 60% rule and the format most test-takers encounter.
C2 (Großes Deutsches Sprachdiplom)
C2 also examines four skills, with a different point distribution and its own thresholds. If you are preparing for C2, check the current point table on the official Goethe-Institut website before your exam — requirements at this level are updated more frequently than at B-levels.
What happens if you fail one module?
Here is the part most candidates do not know: failing a single module does not force you to repeat the entire exam. The Goethe-Institut offers partial retakes:
- You receive confirmation of the modules you passed.
- Within a limited period (currently 12 months), you can register to retake only the failed module(s).
- If you pass the remaining module(s) within that window, you get the full certificate.
- You pay only for the modules you retake, not the full exam fee.
There is no limit on how many times you can sit a Goethe exam or a module retake — each attempt simply requires paying the applicable fee. Policies and prices can change, so always confirm the current rules on the official Goethe-Institut site or with your local exam center when you book.
Retake strategy: think like the grading sheet
Because modules are graded independently, smart preparation looks different from "study everything harder":
- Diagnose early. Take a realistic mock test and score yourself per module, not just overall. Most learners discover one module sits below 60% while the others are comfortable.
- Pour your hours into the weakest module. Moving Listening from 13/25 to 16/25 passes the exam; moving Reading from 22/25 to 24/25 changes nothing.
