You need 60% in BOTH the written and oral sections to pass. That means at least 147 out of 242 points in the written exam (Leseverstehen, Sprachbausteine, Hörverstehen, Schriftlicher Ausdruck) AND at least 45 out of 75 points in the Mündliche Prüfung. If you fail one section, you can retake only that section within one year.
The TELC B2 exam costs between €180-280 depending on the test center and location. It's slightly more expensive than B1. Some Volkshochschulen (VHS) offer discounted rates. The fee usually includes one retake of a failed section within 12 months.
B2 is significantly harder: longer texts, faster audio, more complex grammar (Konjunktiv II, Passiv), and the writing section requires argumentative essays (Erörterung) not just letters. Speaking requires defending opinions with evidence. B2 is needed for university studies and many professional jobs.
An Erörterung is an argumentative essay where you discuss a topic from multiple perspectives. You must present arguments for and against, then give your own opinion with reasoning. Common topics: digitalization, work-life balance, environmental issues, education. Use connectors like 'einerseits/andererseits', 'obwohl', 'dennoch'.
Speaking topics are more complex than B1: work and career, technology and society, health and lifestyle, environment, education system, media influence. You must present a 3-5 minute presentation, participate in a discussion, and solve a problem collaboratively - all with clear argumentation.
TELC B2 is accepted for some university pathways but most German universities require C1 (TestDaF, DSH, or Goethe C1) for direct admission. B2 is often accepted for Studienkolleg (preparatory courses), some Fachhochschulen, and English-taught programs with German requirements.
From B1 to B2 typically requires 300-400 hours of study (6-12 months with regular practice). If you're already at solid B1, intensive preparation of 8-12 weeks can work. Focus on expanding vocabulary, mastering complex grammar, and practicing argumentative writing and speaking.
The TELC B2 certificate does not expire—it's valid for life. However, some employers and institutions may prefer certificates issued within the last 2 years. For professional licenses (healthcare, legal), check specific requirements.
