The Goethe B2 exam asks you to explain ideas clearly and respond to other viewpoints. For writing and speaking, a useful first step is learning how to organise an answer around the exact task.
Goethe B2 writing: plan the forum post
Read every content point before you begin. Write a short outline: your position, reasons, examples and a conclusion. Give each requested point enough space instead of spending most of your time on the introduction.
Illustrative structure: introduce the topic, state your view, explain an advantage and a limitation, suggest an alternative, then close with a clear conclusion. Adapt this structure to the prompt; it is not a script to memorise.
Useful phrases for a Forum Post
- Meiner Meinung nach … — to introduce your view.
- Ein Vorteil ist, dass … — to explain a benefit.
- Allerdings sollte man bedenken, dass … — to qualify an argument.
Practise making each phrase part of a complete sentence. A connector only helps if the idea that follows it is relevant.
The formal message: make the purpose clear
Identify who you are writing to and what you need from them. Use an appropriate greeting, explain the situation, cover the requested points and end politely. Keep the tone consistent.
During revision, check verb position, noun capitalisation and whether the recipient can understand the request without guessing. Use the word count and time limit printed in your current practice materials.
Goethe B2 speaking: prepare your Vortrag
Make brief notes with keywords. Practise giving an introduction, explaining your main points and ending with a conclusion. Record yourself once without stopping, then listen for unclear transitions and repeated filler words.
In the discussion, respond to what your partner actually says. Ask a follow-up question, explain agreement or disagreement, and support your view with a reason.

- Draft one forum post and check it against every instruction.
- Write one formal message for a different situation.
- Record a short presentation and repeat it with fewer notes.
- Practise a discussion with a partner and review one recurring mistake.
For reading and listening, keep a separate error log. Balanced preparation matters because each module has its own result.
