The TestDaF exam assesses German for an academic setting. If you are preparing for German university studies, start with your programme’s language requirements and work backwards from its application deadline.
What is TestDaF?
TestDaF examines reading, listening, writing and speaking. Academic tasks require you to understand information, explain relationships and present a clear argument. General conversation practice helps, but it does not replace practising these task types.
TestDaF exam structure: digital or paper-based
TestDaF is available in digital and paper-based versions. The task designs differ, so use materials for the version you will book. Check the current provider instructions rather than transferring timings or strategies from another format.
For a digital test, practise producing and reviewing text on a keyboard. For paper-based preparation, work on clear handwriting and organising notes. For either version, practise recording spoken responses under the relevant time limit.
TestDaF scoring system: TDN 3, 4 and 5
Results are reported separately for the four skills using TestDaF levels, including TDN 3, TDN 4 and TDN 5. Read the individual results rather than treating an average as proof of readiness.
University admission requirements
TDN 4 in all four parts meets the general language standard for unrestricted admission to German higher education. It does not replace the other conditions of admission. Confirm your programme’s requirements and how it handles alternative score profiles before applying.
Preparation strategies for academic German
Reading and listening
Summarise an academic text in your own words. Identify the main claim, evidence and limitations. For a lecture or interview, take brief notes and separate the speaker’s argument from examples.
Writing and speaking
Practise explaining a chart or comparing two positions where your task requires it. Use a clear opening, connected points and a conclusion. Check whether every statement is supported by the supplied information.
Record a spoken answer and listen for missing links between ideas. Practise finishing within the limit without rushing the final point.
