What is the ÖSD German exam?
ÖSD preparation involves reading, listening, writing and speaking. Your tasks and assessment depend on the exam name and level, so begin with the matching official model test.
ÖSD exam structure and levels: A1–C2
ÖSD Zertifikat B1 and C2 have four separate skill modules. Other standard ÖSD exams generally use a written module and an oral module; integration exams have their own arrangements. For ÖSD Zertifikat B2, reading, listening and writing belong to the written module, while speaking is the oral module.
This distinction matters for retakes. A difficulty in one written skill at a two-module exam is not necessarily a separately bookable skill retake. Ask the centre about the rules for your qualification.
Austrian German and language variation
Prepare to understand different standard German usages rather than trying to imitate a local dialect. Include listening and reading material from Austria, Germany and Switzerland in your routine.
Illustrative vocabulary examples: Austrian usage may include Jänner for Januar or Marille for Aprikose. Learn such terms in context, but give most of your attention to understanding the whole passage and completing the task.
Preparation strategies for ÖSD
- Reading: locate the evidence for an answer and check the meaning of paraphrases.
- Listening: take a timed first attempt, then review difficult passages.
- Writing: cover every requested point and check the tone for your recipient.
- Speaking: practise explaining a view, asking questions and responding naturally.
Use an error log to decide your next practice session. Repeating a full test without reviewing the mistakes gives you less information about what to improve.

Consult the current model test and exam regulations for your exact level. Timings, assessment and dictionary permissions vary; do not use a single rule across A1–C2.
Registration, fees and certificate acceptance
Ask your centre for available dates, current fees, result timing and retake options. Separately, confirm acceptance with the university, employer or receiving authority. Neither a level label nor an “Austrian certification” description replaces that check.
